Vintage Comics & Graphic Novels
Graphic storytelling gained popularity in the newspapers with comic strips that included the hugely popular Flash Gordon as pictured here and the likes of Dick Tracy. The 1930s and the rise of storytelling in the way of pulp fiction demonstrated a need for heroes and adventure stories. From these beginnings the Golden Age of Comics began in the 1940s with such icons as Batman and Superman.
Many of the mainstay features of the comic book super hero first appeared in pulp formulas. But over time, the world of comics has been credited as the originatal format for much of America's pop culture icons.
In addition to pulp fiction roots, cross over between Old Time Radio and the Cliffhanger Serial genres also had an influence on the comic world. Captain Marvel appeared in comic, radio and serial formats. Batman appeared in a 1943 Cliffhanger serial and again in 1949 with Superman hitting the small screen in the 1952.
As the popularity of comic books and graphic novels soared, it only became a matter of time before the heroes of the pulp age made their debut on the color pages drawn with pen and ink. The Shadow, Doc Savage, Zorro and the Spider among others have appeared in comic book and graphic novel length stories.
Here in this section, we will try to make available those comic books and graphic novels that have some ties back to the pulp fiction era.
