Recognized as the innovator of the hard-boiled detective novel, Dashiell Hammett succeeded in elevating the pulp genre to the level of fine literature. Drawing on his experiences for the Pinkerton Detective Agency, he wrote such influential novels as Red Harvest, The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man all of which were adapted into major motion pictures. But at the hieght of his powers, this loose-living writer fell victim to excesses and saw his writing abilities diminish.
