Phantom Detective: Emperor of Death

by Robert Wallace

New pulp facsimile reprint from Wildside Press.

The Phantom Detective classic pulp magazine began with this very issue, which was originally published in February, 1933. The Phantom Detective continued regular publication well into the 1950s.

As the lead story, this issue features a complete novel: "The Emperor of Death" by G. Wayman Jones (billed as "from the casebook of Richard Curtis Van Loan"). Three additional stories -- "Framed" by Will Levinrew; "Death on Dow Stree" by Jack D'Arcy; and "Rub-Out" by John H. Compton complete the fictional contents.

Of special interest to fans of hero-pulps is the brief editorial: "Introducing the Phantom," which sets the stage for this new avenging hero. Van Load, the "Phantom Detective" fits snugly in the same mold as that other great hero of the pulp magazines, The Shadow.
