Authors > Edgar Allan Poe

Poet and author of numerous short stories during the first half of the 19th century which laid the foundation for the modern detective, horror and science fiction genres.

Besides mystery and suspense, Poe was adept at fantasy, humor, satire, science fiction and poetry. Poe is at the same time the father of another branch of modern fiction: the detective story. His character Dupin, original exponent of scientific deduction, appeared a generation before Sherlock Holmes, and in Murders in the Rue Morgue Poe created, at the very birth of the genre, one of its greatest masterpieces. Rarely since has the detective story attained the literarydistinction which its inventor brought to it.

The Fall of the House of Usher

DURING the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country, and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher. I know not how it was—but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit.

The Masque of the Red Death

There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men.
